History Of Cumberland Initiative
A group of academics specialising in simulation, modelling, and systems thinking for healthcare met at Cumberland Lodge on Windsor Great Park in July 2010
They came from more than a dozen universities and from a broad disciplinary background that includes design, engineering, management science, modelling, operational research, problem structuring and simulation. They recognised the potential for these disciplines to make a greater impact on healthcare in its hour of need.
They agreed to push for more simulation and modelling in the NHS to meet its funding and quality challenges. The Cumberland Accord emerged as a commitment by this academic community to campaign for a more systematic and integrated approach to such issues.
This loosely-connected alliance met for two more overnight think-tank events – one at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and one at Lancaster University. Two further events are planned in 2011, one in Southampton and one in Belfast.
